907 Merrill F. Green, 88, No services are going to be held. While
commuting between PHX and LAX, toward the end of his flying
career, Merrill became a prolific reader of the author, Zane
Grey. Merrill's ashes will be scattered up in the mountains near PHX.,
where Zane Grey frequently visited and referred to often in his novels.
Merrill was a devout believer of
Reincarnation. He told me once, while flying over the mid section of our
country, "In the next life Walt, you'll be my Captain and I'll be your
co-pilot."
If there is reincarnation, I'd just as
soon remain his co-pilot, over and over
again.
Walt S.I just learned
today that Merrill Green passed away early Christmas morning. He was a
personal friend of mine. He taught me a lot about flying and about having
the right attitude.
One of his lessons was: When ever anyone aggressively attacks you never
use Karate. Always use Judo. That is never fight using an aggressive style
when arguing. But use a defensive style. Step aside and let the force of
the attacker be his demise. He will hit his head against the wall behind
you or he will be attacking thin air."
I used this when I was doing check rides as a check airman. I was baby
sitting the phones one day, and a captain called me from the gate and
said, "Walt, we don't have crew meals scheduled for this segment, but I
want them. I am going to take my crew to breakfast up stairs at the
restaurant before we depart. So you can count on a delay of our flight!"
I calmly replied, "OK."
He said, "What do you mean, OK?"
I said, "You just told me what was going to happen and I'm just
acknowledging what you said."
He said, "Oh for cryin' out loud. Can't you get us three crew meals put on
for us?"
I said, "Yes. But you didn't ask me for that. You told me what you were
going to do."
There was silence on the other end of the phone line.
I told him the meals will be put on immediately. They left with out a
delay.
It was one of those times I used Merrill Green's philosophy of arguing
with a Judo tactic.

My Dad - John R. Ziegler GE 2296
On Monday June 29th, 2009 -
My dad was called home.
He passed without pain and left us with a parting thought, I paraphrase
“What you see before is no longer me, it is the vessel which contained my
spirit, and my spirit is now in heaven with Jesus, rejoice.”
It is hard to be a wife, son, daughter or friend left behind, it brings
great sadness as we are unable to share our lives with those who have gone
before us.
I’m proud of my dad of who he was and in his unshakable faith in the lord,
his wife, and his family.
I thank all of you for being his friend and bringing much joy and
celebration to his life.
God Bless
Robert Ziegler |

It is with a very sad heart that I must inform you all
that our very good friend JOHN (JACK) SPOOR BROOME passed away this
past Friday evening the 10th of April, 2009, following an extended
illness. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Pat and family. A
Memorial Service is being planned and I will keep you advised as to the
arrangements.
Jack flew for AAL back in 1943-1948. He had to leave AAL and take over his
father’s extensive land holdings in California when his dad died. Jack was
a Grey Eagle # 0427 and attended many local LAX meetings, always bringing
vegetables from his ranches and on several occasions took the local group
for a ride in his 56 ft. Hatteras around the LAX Harbor.
Sadly,
Don Allen, Past President
The Grey
Eagles, Inc.
This notice is to
inform you that the public Memorial for Jack Broome will be held at 4
p.m. on Wednesday, May 27th at Jack’s Ranch in Oxnard.
Please call me if you have any questions at 805-498-1668.
Don Allen
John "Jack" Spoor Broome QB # 06548
Jack Broome, an Oxnard California rancher and avid aviator and sportsman
whose philanthropy helped fund many Colleges and Universities has died at
91. Jack was home at his "Rancho Guadalasca" in Oxnard, CA when he "Went
West" on April 10, 2009 after suffering several strokes. He was born in
Chicago, IL December 1, 1917.
When a student at Washington & Lee, Jack was appointed by the Governor of
Virginia to represent the State of Virginia in Washington DC, at the
founding of the Civilian Pilot Training Program in 1939.
Jack was a Charter member of the AOPA; a Life Member of the "Hat in the
Ring" Air Safety Foundation; employed as Flight Supervisor for the
Civilian Pilot Training Program and the War Training Service pilot
training program in Washington DC, as Flight Standards Specialist and
Acting Chief of the Flight Section, 1941-1943.
He was a transport pilot in WWII and flew for American Airlines
(1943-1946) until his father died in 1946 when he had to leave to help
operate the extensive family ranches in California. The Broome family
began farming in Ventura County in the 1880's. His grandfather was an
early investor in the "Pony Express" mail route across the western United
States.
Jack was a Director for the Flying Farmers of California and later
appointed to the National Board of Flying Farmers. He was President of the
Aviation Country Club of California in 1973; a Director of the Aero Club
of Southern California; a passenger on the inaugural flight of the
Concord, May 25, 1976; a congressional guest at the landing of the first
Space Shuttle, April 14, 1981, and flew solo round trip across the
Atlantic to Europe in 1985.
Jack owned and flew an MU-2, a twin turboprop aircraft, a difficult plane
to handle, until two years ago.
Jack was not only an accomplished pilot but a yachtsman as well. He
competed in the Transpacific Sailboat Yacht Race from Los Angeles to
Hawaii. He kept a 56 ft Hatteras motor yacht (which Jack named the "Pony
Express") in San Pedro, CA and took many friends to and from Catalina
Island.
"He was one of the most extraordinary, kind and generous people who ever
walked the face of the earth", said Michael Maloney, a longtime family
friend who runs a management consulting firm in Camarillo. "I never saw
him without a smile on his face. He always treated everybody with
respect."
In 1998, Bill Gates bought a seascape by Winslow Homer from Jack. The
painting, "Lost on the Grand Banks", was the last major seascape by Homer
still in private hands. Over the years Jack loaned the painting to major
museums, including the National Gallery in Washington, DC and the
Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
He donated over $5 million in 1999 for a library at California State
University at Channel Islands (CSUCI), which bears his name. The glass and
steel library, designed by renowned British architect Sir Norman Foster,
opened last year. Richard Rush, President of CSUCI said "He wasn't looking
for praise or public adulation, he was just a good man, a kind man, and he
wanted to help out."
President Emeritus (of CSUCI), and a close friend Handel Evans, said "Jack
was a very private and quiet person; he operated in the background a lot."
When he offered to fund the library Jack wanted the gift to be anonymous
but he agreed to go public only when Evans told him it would lend
credibility to the fledgling University. At the dedication, a beaming Jack
opened his arms wide and declared the library a gift to both students and
the people of Ventura County.
In addition to his gift to CSUCI, Jack supported Casa Pacifica, a home for
abused and emotionally disturbed children near Camarillo, CA; Louisiana
State University in Baton Rouge, LA, where he was named to the LSU Alumni
Hall of Distinction in 2000; Pepperdine University in Malibu CA, where he
was presented his Doctor of Laws, in 2003; and CSUCI awarded him the
Doctor of Humane Letters in 2005. As an Olympic supporter (he carried the
Torch for over a half a mile in the 1984 Olympic Torch relay when the
Olympics were in LA).
In 2004, Jack decided to fund a bronze sculpture of a "happy" tiger for
LSU whose nickname is the "Tigers". "The sculpture stands at the entrance
to a museum on campus", said Charlie Roberts, president and CEO of the LSU
Alumni Association. "All the tigers you see here on campus are growling
and snarling but Jack didn't want tigers out there that would scare
children – he wanted a happy tiger."
Over the years Jack has belonged to many other aviation organizations. The
National Business Aviation Association (NBAA); Association of Naval
Aviation; Navy League; Airforce Association; American Airlines Grey
Eagles; the Los Angeles Hangar then the Oxnard-Santa Barbara Hangar Quiet
Birdmen where he was a charter member, to name a few more.
He has made the use of his ranch available for the annual QB Hangar (OXR-SBA)
Bar-B-Q and Airshow for the past 38 years. The 39th Ranch Roundup will be
held on Monday, June 8, 2009, per Jack's request.
Jack is survived by his lovely wife, Patricia (Prichard); daughters
Elizabeth Grether of Somis, CA; Ann Priske of Houston, TX; son John S.
Broome, Jr. of Camarillo and eight grandchildren.
A private family service was held Wednesday, April 15th in Santa Barbara,
CA with a public Memorial service to be held in the near future.
Personalized from articles in the Ventura County Star Newspaper,
4/15/2009, and a family furnished Bio.

We regret to report the passing of GE# 1402 Robert J.
Lagerstrom,76, to-day (02/05/09). Bob was a copilot on a B-47 involved
in a mid air collision with an F-86. The F-86 driver ejected and instead
of a free fall to a lower altitude and warmer air, his chute opened
immediately and he damn near froze to death before landing in a field.
The B-47 had the right outboard engine knocked lose from the aft
attachment and was hanging at a 45 degree angle causing a lot of drag.
Part of the tail was also damaged.
The big problem was the 8,000# nuclear bomb they were carrying. It was
decided lower the weight before landing and the weapon was dropped in
Savannah Bay. The weapon was not armed, according to Bob and the rest of
the crew.
There has been much controversy about this weapon and many searches have
been made. To the best of my knowledge, it has never been found.
Ironically it happened on the 51st anniversary of his mid-air collision.
Bob was President of The Grey Eagles in 1995 and very active with the
organization. The memorial will be at 11AM, Saturday, February 21.
